Groovy Baby - Reliant Kitten part 5

With the engine and gearbox assembled it was time to fit the combined unit to the chassis.

Below, I then fitted the fuel tank and a copper fuel pipe to the front of the car.

Meanwhile, my customers, a father and son team (they also restored and painted several parts), took the opportunity to do some of the cleaning and painting of the underside of the body. To that end we tipped the body on its side on to some old mattresses and were blessed with some good weather.

The underneath of the fibre-glass bodyshell was cleaned with plenty of degreaser and a good blast with the pressure washer. Several repairs were made to the underside to put right various accidents over the years in which parts of the floor were cracked and torn. Then a coat of underseal was applied. Of course the fibre-glass doesn’t rust but it does, if not painted, become hygroscopic and moisture can start to delaminate it. The engine compartment was stripped out ready to be sanded down and painted.

Next time..

I’ll post some pics of the many repairs the body required.

STAY TUNED!
